The James Read Memorial Lecture Series was created to celebrate the ideas of Dr. James Read who developed the clinical terms which provided much of the early intellectual innovation of SNOMED CT and continues on to explore the real-world uses of SNOMED CT.

This year's James Read Memorial Lecturer is Dr. Pamela Cipriano, an internationally recognised nursing leader. Dr. Cipriano is the 29th President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and a Professor at the University of Virginia’s School of Nursing and Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy in Charlottesville, VA. She previously served as ICN’s First Vice President, and president of the American Nurses Association.

Dr Cipriano is well known, both in her own country, the United States of America, and internationally, as a strong advocate for the nursing profession, with extensive experience as an academic medical center executive focusing on improving the quality and safety of service delivery and the work environment. She has been instrumental in studying the safety of EHRs as well as technologies that improve clinical workflow and efficiency, and advocating for nurse-led design and testing of technologies that support nursing care.
