Description
To allow a secure way to prescribe in Primary Care (General Practice / Community), transmit to a Dispenser (e.g. community pharmacist) and send a reimbursement message to the Reimbursement Agency (NHSBSA).
Scope
NHS Primary care prescribers in England (~8,000 GP practices), dispensers with a NHS dispensing contract (~12,000 dispensing sites) and the national reimbursement agency.
How SNOMED CT will be used
SNOMED CT will be used as the coding as the sole method of communicating the coded medicine and device information in the electronic prescription method.
Why SNOMED CT will be used
SNOMED CT codes are used as part of the NHS Dictionary of Medicines and Devices (dm+d) which is the terminology of choice for NHS England.
