Description
Implement a new emergency department information system using SNOMED CT at the user interface to record a coded clinical impression and eventual diagnosis.
Scope
Hospital emergency departments at Wairau and Nelson hospitals operated by the Nelson-Marlborough District Health Board. Other emergency departments will also use SNOMED CT as they implement new information systems.
How SNOMED CT will be used
SNOMED CT concepts are selected at the user interface when a patient presents to capture the emergency physician's clinical impression and eventual diagnosis. A reference set of about 3000 concepts from the international release is used. The same reference set will be used by other district health boards and by ambulance services.
Why SNOMED CT will be used
SNOMED CT enables the fast paced demands of hospital emergency departments to be met with precise information that can be captured in real time.
