How SNOMED CT will be used
Immunization data is entered by the Patient from its paper document and verified by a professional or entered directly by a professional. Immunization data is exchanged via HL7 CDA with for example the general practitioner who can import or export the data in his own EMR.
The immunization check (VIAVAC.ch) is then performed from the doctors system or directly from the portal also with this CDA. The HL7 CDA is containing Value Sets with SNOMED CT codes for vaccinations, immune diseases, past illnesses and allergies among others.
Why SNOMED CT will be used
SNOMED CT provides the necessary granularity to code the needed information. It’s also an international standard and therefore preferred, but currently also local codes where used to code Switzerland specific requirements. Later on this could probably be covered with a national extension.
