SNOMED CT maps
SNOMED International produces and maintains maps for our Members and clinical stakeholders who use other coding systems, classifications and terminologies in addition to SNOMED CT.
SNOMED CT is a terminology that can cross-map to other international terminologies, classifications and code systems. Maps are associations between particular concepts or terms in one system and concepts or terms in another system that have the same (or similar) meaning.
SNOMED International creates maps from SNOMED CT to other code systems, classifications or terminologies to support our Members and other stakeholders that use these products alongside SNOMED CT.
Our map products include, but are not limited to:
GMDN©
The Global Medical Device Nomenclature© (GMDN©) is a list of generic names used to identify all medical device products. Such products include those used in the diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, treatment or alleviation of disease or injury in humans.
The main purpose of the GMDN© is to provide health authorities and regulators, health care providers, manufacturers and others with a naming system that can be used to exchange medical device information and support patient safety.
Resources:
-
SNOMED CT users who intend to use the GMDN© codes and want to obtain the SNOMED CT to GMDN© Simple Map should download and complete the Standard Linkage Table License form and send to GMDN© at orders@gmdnagency.org.
-
Once the Agency confirms that a license has been issued, SNOMED International will make the map available as a download by contacting info@snomed.org. The map has been available to the public by this process from July 31, 2015.
For additional information, contact GMDN Agency.
ICD-10
The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is the foundation for the identification of health trends and statistics globally, and the international standard for reporting diseases and health conditions, published by the World Health Organization. ICD-10 is the tenth ICD revision.
SNOMED CT to ICD-10 map:
-
Provides a semi-automated coding of ICD-10 statistical classification data from a clinical record which is clinically encoded in SNOMED CT.
-
Aids in the development of ICD-10 classification codes from SNOMED CT-encoded records for use in registries and diagnosis groupers.
-
Serves as a SNOMED CT to ICD-10 map validated by the WHO and SNOMED International and as a source for the development of maps to ICD-10 extensions developed and maintained by a member country.
-
SNOMED CT is mapped to ICD-10 version 2016.
-

The SNOMED CT to ICD-10 map is released on January 31 and July 31 as a derivative of the SNOMED CT International Release. This map is a directed set of associations from SNOMED CT source concepts to ICD-10 target classification terms. The SNOMED CT source domains for the map are limited to subtypes of 404684003 |clinical finding|, 272379006 |event| and 243796009 |situation with explicit context|.
Interested parties may view this map as a guest using the SNOMED International Mapping Tool. Please note that ICD-9CM and ICPC maps have been deprecated.
The ICD-10 map can be accessed by downloading the International Edition release package from MLDS.
Please note that SNOMED CT to ICD-9CM and SNOMED CT to ICPC maps have been deprecated.
ICD-O
The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is the foundation for the identification of health trends and statistics globally, and the international standard for reporting diseases and health conditions, published by the World Health Organization.
The International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O) is a domain-specific extension of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems for tumor diseases. This classification is widely used by cancer registries.
SNOMED CT to ICD-O map:
-
The SNOMED CT to ICD-O maps are released as a simple map reference set in the SNOMED CT International Release. The SNOMED CT source domains for the maps are limited to subtypes of 400177003|Neoplasm and/or hamartoma (morphologic abnormality)| and 91723000|Anatomical structure (body structure)| for ICD-O morphological codes and Topographical codes.
-
The published maps to ICD-O-3.1 are being updated only for maintenance purposes. The maps to ICD-O-3.2 are planned for a future release after the publication of the ICD-O-3.2 classification, and dependent on its availability to upload for mapping.
Interested parties may view this map as a guest using the SNOMED International Mapping Tool. Please note that ICD-9CM and ICPC maps have been deprecated.
The ICD-O map can be accessed by downloading the International Edition release package from MLDS.
MedDRA
Owned by ICH, MedDRA, the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities, is a rich and highly specific standardised medical terminology developed by ICH to facilitate sharing of regulatory information internationally for medical products used by humans and is used for registration, documentation and safety monitoring of medical products both before and after a product has been authorised for use.
The SNOMED CT to MedDRA and MedDRA to SNOMED CT maps are intended to facilitate the exchange of data between regulatory databases (which use MedDRA) and healthcare databases/electronic health records (which use SNOMED CT.)
It is planned that the maps will be released annually in April.

Licensed SNOMED CT users from Member countries can access the maps from their National Release Centre. Licensed users from non-Member countries can access the maps from SNOMED International using MLDS.
Orphanet
Orphanet is a unique resource, gathering and improving knowledge on rare diseases so as to improve the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients with rare diseases. The Orphanet Rare Disease Ontology is a structured vocabulary for rare diseases derived from the Orphanet database, capturing relationships between diseases, genes and other relevant features. Orphanet was established in France by the INSERM (French National Institute for Health and Medical Research) in 1997.

Orphanet and SNOMED International have produced a map between SNOMED CT and Orphanet to align Rare Disease content in Orphanet with SNOMED CT. Additional maps have been included in the 2022 and 2023 map releases. They will be reviewed annually.
The SNOMED CT to Orphanet map will deliver rare disease content into the International Release, also providing an Inserm generated linkage table as part of the SNOMED International - Inserm collaboration agreement.
